What type of inhibition does gemfibrozil confer onto CYP2C8 and what medications could be affected?
When it comes to drug interactions, many healthcare professionals now recognize that the inhibition of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, specifically CYP3A4, can cause clinically relevant drug-drug interactions.(1) Even though the majority of medications used in general clinical practice rely upon CYP3A4 for their metabolism, it is important to recognize that other CYP enzymes are also important metabolic pathways for other medications. One such CYP enzyme that rarely gets much attention is CYP2C8.
