Which loop diuretic has the potential to interact with azathioprine (Imuran; Azasan) due to the inhibition of thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT)?

Answer

The use of azathioprine (Imuran; Azasan) is common for a number of conditions, some of which include the prevention of rejection of organ transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease (in particular Crohn's disease), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and several other immune mediated chronic diseases.(1-10)  As it relates to organ transplantation, it is plausible that some patients may also require the use of a loop diuretic at some point in their post-transplant treatment while on azathioprine.  The loop diuretic that has the potential to interact with azathioprine is ...
