What is the mechanism of action by which Misai kucing or Java Tea (Orthosiphon stamineus Benth) claims to cause diuresis or act as diuretic?
The herb Misai kucing or Java Tea (Orthosiphon stamineus Benth) comes from a shrub in various parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.(1,2) The active ingredients found in Misai kucing include flavonoids (sinesetine and eupatorine), rosmarinic acid, cichoric acid, caffeic acid, betulinic acid, and 16-b-hydroxybetulinic acid.(3-5) It is commonly used to treat a number of problems such as arthritis, gout, inflammation, and diabetes.(1-5) In addition, it is known to have diuretic properties, where it is used by some patients to treat high blood pressure or hypertension.(4-6)
