Which North and South American (Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico) herbs or natural medicines are known to be inhibitors of xanthine oxidase?

Answer

This is a continuation of the identification of herbs and natural medicines from other regions of North and South America that are known to be inhibitors of xanthine oxidase (XO) in patients with chronic hyperuricemia or gout.  Please refer to the last issue for general background information related to hyperuricemia or gout. 

This issue is dedicated to the identification of herbs derived from remaining regions of North and South America (Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico) that are known to inhibit XO.  Those of potential clinical relevance or importance are summarized in the table below.(1-3)....

The full answer to this issue contains a table summarizing all of the North and South American herbs and their pharmacokinetic characteristics in the inhibition of xanthine oxidase.
