Why are patients with genetic polymorphisms to CYP2D6 more likely to have weight loss and tachycardia while taking atomoxetine (Strattera)?
Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a non-stimulant medication that is most commonly used in the treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).1 Instead of increasing the release of norepinephrine in the central nervous system, it works to selectively inhibit the reuptake of norepinephrine.1 The degree of increase in norepinephrine can directly influence the risk for side effects or adverse drug events.
