Are CYP2D6 poor metabolizers at greater risk for bradycardia and/or hypotension when taking the beta-receptor blocker, metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol, Toprol XL)?
As a quick review, metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol, Toprol XL) is a beta-1 selective beta-blocker used to treat a number of conditions in patients with cardiovascular disease. In relation to the other available beta-blockers, metoprolol is the most dependent on the CYP2D6 enzyme for its metabolism. In fact, about 70-80% of metoprolol's metabolism is through this phase 1 metabolic pathway.
